Brand, John (1)
Brand, John (1), an English divine, was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1743, and educated at Lincoln College, Oxford. In 1774 he was presented to the curacy of Cramlington, near Newcastle, and in 1784 to the rectory of St. Mary-at-Hill, London. He was also appointed secretary to the Society of Antiquaries in the same year. He died September 11, 1806. Mr. Brand was a finished scholar, an able writer, and exemplary in the discharge of all life's duties. He published, Illicit Love (1775, 8vo): — Observations on Popular Antiquities (1777, Svo): — The History and Antiquities of the Town and Count.y of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. (1789 2 volumes, 4to).
