Battely, John, D.D., an English clergyman and antiquary, was born at St. Edmund's Bury, Suffolk, in 1647. He was some time fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and chaplain to archbishop Sancroft, by whose favor he became rector of Adisham, Kent, prebendary of Canterbury, and archdeacon of that diocese. He died Oct. 10, 1708. In 1711 Dr. Thomas Terry published Dr. Batteley's Antiquitates Rutupinoe. See Chalmers, Biog. Dict. s.v.
