Bacon, George Blagden, D.D.

a Congregational minister, son of Rev. Dr. Leonard Bacon, was born in New Haven, Conn., May 23, 1836. His preparatory studies were prosecuted in the Hopkins Grammar-school, New Haven, and afterwards he entered Yale College with the class of 1856. During his collegiate course, he took a voyage for his health, as captain's clerk and purser of the United States ship " Portsmouth," to Siam and China, and was absent from 1853 to 1858. He received from Yale College both degrees, A.B. and A.M., in 1866. From 1858 to 1860 he was a member of the Yale Theological Seminary, and from 1860 to 1861 of Andover Theological Seminary. In the last-mentioned year he was ordained pastor of the Orange Valley Church, N. J., which position he held until his death, Sept. 15,1876. He was vice-president of the American Missionary Association, a trustee of the American Congregational Union (1864-75), and a director of the American Home Missionary Society from 1872.
