Backereel, Gilles

Backereel, Gilles a Dutch painter, was a native of Italy and contemporary with Rubens. He competed with Vandyke in an altar-piece in a church at Antwerp. In the cathedral at Bruges is an altar piece by (illes Backereel representing St. Charles Borromeo administering the sacrament to a numerous group of persons attacked by the plague. In the Church of the Augustinians at Antwerp is another admirable picture by him of the crucifixion. Some of his works are also at Brussels in the Church of the Franciscans.
