Allen, Carey

Allen, Carey a Presbyterian minister, was born in Cumberland County, Va., in 1767. He entered Hampden Sidney College at the age of seventeen. In 1789 he was received by the Hanover Presbytery as a candidate for the ministry; was licensed to preach in 1790; and spent the two succeeding years as a missionary in Virginia and Kentucky. In 1794 he settled in Kentucky, and was installed pastor of Paint Creek and Silver Creek churches. He died Aug. 5, 1795. He was remarkable for a kindly disposition, and a great propensity to drollery without seeming to be aware of it. See Sprague, Annals of the Amer. Pulpit, 3, 563.
