Ackworth, George, Lld

Ackworth, George, Ll.D., an English divine and civilian, of whose family and birth we have no account. He travelled in France and Italy, where he studied civil law; was public orator at Cambridge; and in the following year was made Doctor of Laws. In 1562 he was admitted an advocate in the Court of Arches, and afterwards lived in the family of archbishop Parker, who gave him a prebend. He was vicar-general in 1567 to Horne, bishop of Winchester; and in 1575 the archbishop of Canterbury permitted him to hold the rectory of Elingtun, alias Wroughtori. In 1576 he was appointed master of the faculties, and judge of the Prerogative Court in Ireland, having been turned out of all his situations in the last-named country because of his dissolute conduct. Besides one or two other works, he wrote De Visibili Romanarchia, contra Nic. Sanderi Monarchiam (Lond. 1622, 4to).
